Abstract

Talking Up New Consultant Posts: Three Different Journeys

The transition from trainee to consultant is a big step. The challenges and circumstances that await us depend greatly on the work environment that we choose for ourselves. Advanced training cannot prepare us for all of these challenges. In this breakfast session three consultant geriatricians share their very different experiences, challenges and lessons learnt.  Tom Moodie is a New Zealand trained consultant who finds himself working in a new position in regional Western Australia. John Obeid is a Sydney consultant who was one of the first geriatricians to venture into private medicine . He “fell into” private practice by chance and has seen his business grow to a very busy practice across 4 hospitals, though he still manages to takes most Wednesdays off!  Mark Hohenberg, also from Sydney, explains how he has started as a clinical academic in research and education, and will describe the academic career pathway for prospective researchers and educationalists.
